Juliana Quaresma
Juliana Quaresma is a sheep farmer from Northeastern Brazil. She has a deep passion for her work; in her words, “Everybody has a call, a gift, a connection. Mine is working with farms and food.” To Juliana, food is more than something to eat—it is deeply connected to our role in the ecosystem. Everybody consumes products produced on farms: whether they realize it or not, food unites people with nature. Juliana is passionate about equitable land access, and part of that means that everyone should have the opportunity to connect with nature.
One of her favorite aspects of farming is watching people connect with the sheep for the first time; she considers it their “aha” moment. Juliana keeps Icelandic sheep, a breed hardy enough to survive the long Ithaca winters. Even though it can be challenging, she loves her work. Juliana believes in the positive impact of local farming on the environment. Local food doesn’t just appear, it is produced by hard-working farmers who care about their communities. Juliana invites everyone, even those who do not feel called to work the land, to respect and appreciate their local farmers.
